What is Social Bookmarking and how can it help my blog, website, and business?

"What is Social Bookmarking and why is it important for me?" That is a question that many people think, but maybe are afraid to ask. Social Bookmarking is a tool that you can use to help promote your blog, business, or website online. Lets talk about how social bookmarking works, and how it can help you increase your online presence.

Social bookmarking is really a simple concept. It takes bookmarking things you like on your computer to the next step. Instead of you just seeing your "favorites" on your computer, you can access the links you have bookmarked from any computer any where because you have bookmarked through online bookmarking sites. There are many social bookmarking sites floating around, and I am sure you have seen them as you read blogs, articles, and look at different websites. Some examples are, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUponIt, Reedit, Furl and Newsvine. So what makes this social? When you bookmark an article you like, not only you know it, but it can affect what everyone on the internet is seeing as well.

Do you see how this can affect your business, website or blog? As people read and bookmark what you are posting it will get pushed up in the search engines and more people will see your website, blog posts, articles, videos or whatever you have out there!

How can you begin to social bookmark? Insert an "add this" button bar on your website. This will allow your reader to "share" what they are reading on any social media or social bookmarking site available.

Bookmarking, coupled with the knowledge of how to use keywords can explode the traffic that comes to your site.

Creating A Blog on a Web Site

Almost every business has a website today and if they don't, then they should. The reason is that more and more people are looking to the internet for products and answers than ever before. Even if I want to order a pizza, I go to the Dominoes website and place my order there. Everything is happening online. So should a company also have a blog connected to their website? The answer is yes. Lets talk about how creating a blog on a website can help your business.

You will have a presence among consumers. The people you want to become your customers are spending there time reading, writing and searching blogs. Once you begin to write about topics that surround your products, staff, and mission statement people are going to start to get to know you and your company. They are not only going to start to get to know you, but they will begin to trust you. Why will they trust you? Because when you started blogging, you became a person instead of just being a company.

It will help you get noticed in the Search engines. I have said it before and I will say it again, what good is your website you paid thousands of dollars for if NO ONE WILL EVER SEE IT? Unless you want to dish out a couple thousand dollars more a month in marketing you have to learn what simple things you can do to make your website have a presence online. Creating a blog on a website is a great way to do this. You want the search engines to see that you have more active pages connected to your site. You can link back and forth between your website and your blog. The more links you have going out from your pages, the more the search engines are going to like your site. If the search engines like your site, you will be found by people who want your product.

Having a presence online among consumers is important if you want to be truly successful. There is a myth out there that you have to pay internet gurus lots of money every month to learn how to be noticed on the internet. This isn't true! Do You Know Someone Who is Wondering, How do I Start a Blog?

Then, to help them, have them read this! =)

The first time I encountered a blog, I had done a Google search for a bread recipe. Instead of turning up at all recipes, or recipezaar I ended up in a blog. It's a sad story that I do not remember who that blogger was. But she was famous, and made really good bread. As I looked at her blog, and all the others that I found that same day, I found myself asking, "How do I Start a blog?"
Really, starting a blog is very simple. Here are 4 steps you take when you are ready to start blogging.

Think of a name, a theme, and a niche. When starting my blogs this was the hardest part. Your name is what draws your readers in, your theme determines who will be reading your blog, and your niche determines what you will be writing about. Think about what your passions are. Think about what you could write about daily and not get bored of. Have you seen the movie Julie and Julia? She created a niche, cooking Julia Childs recipes. And because of that she created a following.

Decide who you want to host your blog. There are two main blog hosting venues out there. Blogger and WordPress. The pro's and con's of choosing one of these over the other could be a whole other article, so do your research and decide which is best for your purposes. Usually, when just beginning to blog, most people start with blogger because it is free.

Create Your Blog! Once you have chosen your hosting venue, it is time to create your blog. You will want to decide what kind of layout you want. Following that it is time to upload a bio about yourself, pictures that go along with who you are and what you are blogging about. The truth is, your blog will be constantly getting better as you continue to blog. There are always new widgets to install and new blogging communities to join.

Start blogging! Writing on your blog isn't where "blogging" stops. You will need get out there and start making friends. You make blog friends by reading other peoples blogs who are in your same niche, and comment, comment, comment! This is a mistake I made with my very first blog. I just thought people would "find" me. The internet is too big for people to just "find" you. You have to do some work to get found. For example, understanding key words, back links, and social bookmarking will help your blog get found and read. I ended up getting discouraged and quitting that first blog, I don't want that to happen to you!

I hope this helped you answer the question, "how do I start a blog?" I am by no means an expert, but I have helped many people start blogs and I would love to help you! I am learning new techniques to build my blog every day. To listen to Free How to Blog Videos head here!
